Thich Nhat Hanh is one of my favorite monk guys who is just obviously full of wisdom - and kindness. Had the remarkable opportunity to spend a day with my sister, Meg, and friend, Shari, at a meditation event by Lake Merit in Oakland he did with then-mayor Jerry Brown one day - wow! Still recall the chanting of women monks from Plum Village, France, gracing my ears and heart with warmth and peace. And ability to accept death even or something like that.
Yesterday, Thich Nhat Hanh could be heard on NPR courtesy of HumanKind series. You can get a taste at http://www.humanmedia.org/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=86
What rang bells for me (Buddhist monks are big on bells, btw) were these Twitter-ready words that SAY A LOT: LET's PRACTICE!
- Deep listening
- Loving speech
- If you love someone, tell them today. Tomorrow may be too late. (TWEET all these characters?)
- People of Islam think others want to kill them off. This is a misinterpretation.
Misinterpretations cause war, yes? Like we might be saying to ourselves "Please, Mr. Islamic Country, don't bomb me?" Whereas the Islamic County might be hearing: "I want to bomb you, Mr. Islamic Country." See? Misinterpretation. Obama has that figured, I am hoping and it seems.
Thich Naht Hanh led a Buddhist diplomatic delegation during Vietnam War and was exhiled from Vietnam at age 40 among other interesting historic tidbits.
You can hear an excerpt from his HumanKind interview at http://www.humanmedia.org/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=86&osCsid=d7acab21839e1e498c0d203741ba4056http://www.humanmedia.org/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=86&osCsid=d7acab21839e1e498c0d203741ba4056
He says our deepest need is living in peace and harmony-agreed.
"Peace is always there, to some extent. And if you know how to practice, then you can always be in touch with peace, to some degree, for your nourishment and healing. And then you'll be strong enough to face, to deal with, the opposite side, the negative side."
--Thich Nhat Hanh
Now to go see it they'll let me Tweet at Twitter (but I gotta edit that tell your loved one thing.)
